Hannah Gao Topics / Themes: Links between Asian representation, the first-generational experience, feminism Mediums: Oil Paint, Acrylic Paint My artwork is a window to me: my life experiences, thoughts, and dreams. Much of my work revolves around introspection; through each piece, I strive to bring these abstract personal concepts to life, creating a sense of intimacy that prompts the viewer to interpret and, better yet, relate. hannahgaoart.com / @yurtyobain (TikTok) Selected Works

  • Nature's Artwork

Nature's Network, Irene Ho Watercolor, poster color, color pencil, procreate, 2023. During my visit to the Bunan tribe's "Forest Museum" in the high mountains of Taitung, I witnessed their famous "Walking Trees", with thick aerial branches that continuously grow and replace withered native branches. Believing in the language of animacy, Bunan people extend personhood pronouns beyond humans, including animals and inanimate entities like water and trees. Depicting human eyes peering through the natural veil, I aim to present a striking visual with elements of surrealism, symbolically merging nature with human features. The complex network of branches, similar to vascular structure, partly obscures yet also reveals connectivity between the inside and the outside. These eyes, peering through the natural veil, are silent guardians of history, their watchful presence a bridge connecting the heartbeat of the past to the living breath of now. • Self-Illumination

Self-Illumination, Irene Ho Clay, 2023. In the final piece of this series, I am to highlight the resilience and hope inherent in the journey of self-discovery. Despite the presence of holes, light emanates from the core of the bones, symbolizing the unwavering hope to rediscover oneself. This artwork encourages a return to cultural roots and ancestral wisdom, advocating for a path of self-realization independent of societal expectations. By following one's heart and reconnecting with the past, the piece underscores the transformative journey towards becoming the best version of oneself, guided by the illumination from within.
