Nature's Network, Irene Ho

Watercolor, poster color, color pencil, procreate, 2023.
During my visit to the Bunan tribe's "Forest Museum" in the high mountains of Taitung, I witnessed their famous "Walking Trees", with thick aerial branches that continuously grow and replace withered native branches. Believing in the language of animacy, Bunan people extend personhood pronouns beyond humans, including animals and inanimate entities like water and trees. Depicting human eyes peering through the natural veil, I aim to present a striking visual with elements of surrealism, symbolically merging nature with human features.
The complex network of branches, similar to vascular structure, partly obscures yet also reveals connectivity between the inside and the outside. These eyes, peering through the natural veil, are silent guardians of history, their watchful presence a bridge connecting the heartbeat of the past to the living breath of now.
