- Nature's Artwork
Nature's Network, Irene Ho Watercolor, poster color, color pencil, procreate, 2023. During my visit to the Bunan tribe's "Forest Museum" in the high mountains of Taitung, I witnessed their famous "Walking Trees", with thick aerial branches that continuously grow and replace withered native branches. Believing in the language of animacy, Bunan people extend personhood pronouns beyond humans, including animals and inanimate entities like water and trees. Depicting human eyes peering through the natural veil, I aim to present a striking visual with elements of surrealism, symbolically merging nature with human features. The complex network of branches, similar to vascular structure, partly obscures yet also reveals connectivity between the inside and the outside. These eyes, peering through the natural veil, are silent guardians of history, their watchful presence a bridge connecting the heartbeat of the past to the living breath of now. - Rite of Passage
Rite of Passage, Irene Ho Watercolor, poster color, ink, 2022. This portrait captures the resilience of Taiwanese indigenous women adorned in traditional marriage clothing, a composition inspired by a profound encounter with old photographs depicting their early marriages, stirring reflection on societal roles. Processed with ink and desaturated colors, the artwork emanates a solemn and nostalgic atmosphere, inviting viewers to contemplate the impact of early matrimony. The attire, intricately crafted by mothers, not only pays homage to the matriarchal traditions observed in indigenous communities, as explored in the previous piece, but also prompts a thought-provoking exploration of reversed roles, immersing the viewer in the emotional echoes of these women's lived experiences. - Story Untold
Story Told, Irene Ho Watercolor, poster color, color pencil, ink, 2022. In this artwork, the tattooed hands in the painting are not merely a visual motif but a metaphorical act of cultural preservation, a tactile resistance to the encroachments of an ever-evolving world, striving to hold fast to the precious legacy of tradition. The fading clothing patterns and dripping black ink underscore the hands in front, while effectively providing a sense of magnificence to the painting. See the Artist Request Usage
